Shock Absorber: A Solution to Noisy Water Pipes

Water hammer can be fixed through installation of a shock absorber known as air chamber. Shock absorbers offer cushion which absorbs the force exerted by the water moving inside pipes. Ideally, utilize a shock absorber with compression fittings and tread ends as this allow easy installation without the need of soldering and require minimal plumbing tools.
Before you can start installing a shock absorber, you must know the exact location of the noise origin. Do this by turning on and off your faucets (stop valves) one by one until you find out where the noise is coming from. Install the shock absorber prior the stop valve of a noisy line.
Shut off the water supply prior the installation of your shock absorber. Know the exact measurement of the absorber and cut the water pipe using a pipe cutter to this measure. You must allot some extra pipe so you can insert the shock absorber properly. Prior slipping a compression nut on every pipe end, make sure to drain the water from the line. After that, slip the ferrules on each pipe end and connect the nuts to the shock absorber so you can fasten them. Secure the nuts by tightening them using a wrench. Turn the water and check for leaks.
